We are proud to recognize Dr. Jooyeon Hwang, GC-CPEH Pilot Project Awardee and Associate Professor at UTHealth Houston School of Public Health, who is leading a new $5 million, two-year study funded by the State of Texas.
The project will investigate cancer risks among firefighters across Texas—spanning cadets, active duty, and retirees—who face repeated exposure to toxic smoke. Dr. Hwang’s team will evaluate cancer risk factors through air sampling, occupational histories, and registry data, with findings expected to guide policy and workplace protections.
This award recognizes the significant impact of early pilot funding from GC-CPEH in launching impactful research that is now advancing statewide health and safety initiatives.
